As seen from Royal Caribbean International's Independence of the Seas a couple of seasons back, we watch one of the great spectacles in cruising, the Elephant Walk of cruise ships leaving port. In this case, Port Everglades. One reason I never schedule a dinner seating near or around six p.m. is so I won't miss ships departing port. There is a grace and power about these huge ships moving so close to thirty story condo and apartment buildings.
Port Everglades features a narrow channel for ships to enter and exit the port. Along the northern edge of the channel homes and condos have given rise to a local tradition. Each day as ships sail past, Fort Lauderdale residents and condo owners gather and enjoy the "Elephant Walk" of ships departing. In this case, as Royal Caribbean International's Independence of the Seas sails past, bringing up the the end of the Elephant Walk, the passengers get a kick out of the festivities.
